ART OF GALLERIES

by Nick Fyhrie

Today I went to Chelsea to see some of the current shows. Whenever I go to the galleries, I tend to always pay more attention to the things around me as when I'm looking at art critically. So I'm really glad I brought my camera:

Hauser + Wirth has a gigantic new space on West 18th street that functions more like a museum, with long ascending stair cases into a warehouse size gallery hosting only 4 shows a year!

The current show is Dieter Roth, Bjorn Roth, a very engaging show in such a grand space:

These paintings / vitrines / assemblages were very exciting to my eye, much more vibrant than Anselm Keifer's works and a more up-to-date view than Rauschenberg's assemblages.

The best show that I saw today (and in a while) was Justin Matherly at Paula Cooper Gallery. I was constantly intrigued: Is that real concrete? No, it's foam....are those walkers? Yes! Is that an egyptian style relief on the other side of the foam? Yes!

All in all, it was a great day to look at what's going on in the art world. I highly recommend a visit to the new Hauser + Wirth gallery and Justin Matherly's show at Paula Cooper.
