Des Esseintes & Dorian
In 2007, I made these two paintings which have literal and art historical background. The novelist and art critic J.K. Huysmans wrote "Against Nature" in 1884. Oscar Wilde wrote "The Picture of Dorian Gray" in 1891.
I imagined what it would look like with Des Esseintes holding his dead jewel-encrusted tortoise (pictured left) with his Goya war etchings framed behind him and Dorian (pictured right) thinking erotically of Des Esseintes. The yellow background reference the infamous yellow book.
